History Tourism

Watu Pinawetengan ( A megalithic stone )
A megalithic stone of the ancestors of Minahasa, its surface is covered with crude, mysterious live drawings and scripts which have never been deciphered. According to Minahasa history, this is the place where the ancestors first divided up the land among the people (Watu Pinabetengan means "The stone of discussion about the division"). The ruling was made in order to ensure a peaceful and harmonious life. Seven divisions were made amongst different areas of Tombulu, Tonsea, Toulour, Tontemboan, Tonsawang, Ponosakan and Pasan Ratahan. This is located in Tompaso, about 45 km from Manado. This stone was the big stone chunk natural, so as his form was not uniform. To this stone chunk was gotten by scratches of various motives that was made by the hands of humankind. The scratches there are those that formed the picture of humankind, resembled the male genitals, depicted the female genitals, and the motive of lines as well as the unclear motive his intention. The experts suspected that these scratches were the symbol that was linked with the belief of the megalith culture of the supporting community, that is the belief in the spirit of the ancestors (the ancestors) that it was considered had the invisible strength so as to be able to arrange and determine the life of humankind in the world.
Therefore, humankind must carry out certain worship ceremonies to receive the safety or receive what was hoped for (like: the success of the harvest, refused the danger or expelled the illness) by using stones big as their worship means. The local community trusted that the stone was the place of his meeting place of the leaders and the leader of the Minahasa community original the descendants Toar-Lumimuut (the ancestors of the Minahasa community) in the past, in order to divide the area into six groups of ethnic groups's ethnic group that be classed as into Minahasa ethnic groups.Until this the stone scratched that has been found in Minahasa, just watu pinawetengan, was gotten in the Kawangkoan work territory but could be regarded as the quite important findings and could be put as the history monument, especially the history of culture of the Minahasa community.

Waruga ( Stone Graves - Airmadidi Village )
Waruga ( Stone graves ) 144 beautiful and interesting ancient "Waruga" stone graves (sarcophagi) of Minahasan ancestors dated the Megalithic age can be found in Sawangan village, close to Airmadidi, 24 km from Manado. The small museum and the local guide explain what has been found in the tombs.

Japanese Cave ( Kiawa Village )
These caves were built by the Japanese during the World War II mainly used as a storage for supplies. You can visit the caves while driving along the road between Kiawa and Kawangkoan, two scenic countryside villages.

Recreation Tourism

Lake Linow Color ( Lahendong Village )
Lake Linow is located near Tomohon and is a beautiful but strange lake, which can change color. Sometimes it is red, sometimes green and sometimes blue. A good location for relaxation and resting.

Tomohon ( The City Of Flowers )
A nice little town and the center of Christian Missionaries lays about 25 km from Manado. Located at 700 meters above sea level and between Mount Lokon and Mahawu and with a temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius it is a place to cool off after the hot air of Manado. The land around the village is covered with flowers.

Volcanoes Lokon and Mahawu ( Rurukan Village )
Mount Lokon (1.580 m) and Mahawu (1.311 m), both have crater lakes of considerable beauty, duck-egg blue and smoking. Lokon is usually considered to be more beautiful of the two, but right now it is to risky to there since there was a warning from local goverment. Mt. Mahawu is ok and normally they walk from Rurukan Village. It takes only 1 hour walking from Rurukan Village to the top of Mt. Mahawu. Walking condition is good, you are welcome to do trekking in this mountain.

Tarsius / the smallest monkey - Tangkoko Batuangus

A nature reserve on open grassland covered with a great variety of plants. Located on the slopes of mount "Dua Saudara", the area is composed of impressive green hills and valleys with amazingly scenic views of natural beauty. There are black apes, maleo birds, snakes, wild pigs, hornbills and rusa deer. Located north of Bitung, it covers on area of 3,196 ha. This nature reserve has several cottages and small restaurants nearby. From Manado it takes around 2 hours and 30 minutes to this place. In the past, the road was so rough you would need a 4WD jeep. But now, newly laid roads allow easy accessibility by passenger cars and vans. You are welcome to visit this area.

WE LOVE TO EAT !
The city also has a good number of hotels and restuarants as well as bars and karaoke lounges, which makes it the only option in the province for any kind of nightlife. Places seem to open and close fairly regularly so try to get some local knowledge before setting out for a night on the town. A string of seafood restaurants and stalls along the waterfront set up in the evening, offering visitors a taste of the fiery Minahasan cuisine. If you like it hot sample the Ikan Tude (pronounced "tooday"), a traditional fish recipe with an abundance of chilli – but remember you were warned!
Manado food is famous throughout Indonesia for two things : The Minahasa eat absolutely anything, and the flavor of choice is very, very, spicy. Sugar is used lilttle if at all, with flavor added through lemon and herbs. Being Christian, the Minahasa also often marinate meat in alcohol and favor pork. More exotic protein options include bat, filed rat, and dog, the last which is the obligatory centerpiece of any wedding ceremony or Christmas feast. For the local drinks there are two kinds of drink are made from Palm tree, saguer and cap tikus.

Kawasan Malalayang dan Bolevard

The attraction of beauty of the Manado coast could be witnessed from the Malalayang region to the Bolevard region available at.Kawasan Malalayang had the attraction of the quite beautiful coast.Around it was gotten several cafes that were built in the coastal bank. All the cafe offered various serving sorts sea food with the fish burnt as the guest plate especially.Because of this, the community mentioned him the fish burnt Malalayang. One of Manado's most famous landmarks are referring to the "Boulevard", the 3,5 kilometers which at one time hedged the waterfront and was a favorite gathering point at dusk for locals and tourists alike. Tragically, the fantastic view from this stretch of road is vanishing behind a plain of soil and rocks as reclamation upon reclamation extends further and further out to the sea.The "promenade" down the Boulevard is a fairly hot affair if tackled during the heat of the day, so we would recommend a late afternoon start which will give you a chance to stop in at any number of eating and watering holes along the way.If you start at the harbor or the area behind Jumbo Store, you can maintain a steady pace straight down the road. If you feel like a snack or a shake or a beer to set you on the way, the Sunset Cafe is a great place to start.

Lovers of Seafood, Indonesian and Chinese food won't be disappointed with the parade of restaurants, which extend down the length of the Boulevard. Some of the more well known establishments include: Pondok Hijau, Bahari, Samudra and Wisata Bahari. For those venturing out later at night and wishing to include liquid refreshments and live music, then the Boulevard Bar, Ocean Bar, and Album are some of the night spots frequented. The newly opened "Hooks" Bar and Restaurant is one of the more striking landmarks on the Boulevard (you can't miss the Noah's Arc type boat balanced on the second floor). They have successfully combined tasty food with a bar and band which ensures a great night out. It is also one of the few places you can enjoy a drink outside and marvel at the sunset over Manado Bay. If you have a cast iron stomach and a strong resistance to tummy troubles, then the braver amongst you could "go local" and try the fare at any of the small roadside food stalls (warungs) or hand pushed carts (kaki lima). The fried bananas or roasted corn on the cob could be the safest bets. But I do warn you that eating "from the roadside" is totally at your own discretion (the writer accepts no responsibility for any bouts of food poisoning).By late afternoon you will be able to enjoy many of the impromptu games of football played out on the reclamations around the middle of the Boulevard. Or simply find a quiet spot on the wall and enjoy watching the sun slink into the sea. This could however be easier said than done and be prepared for the "Hello Mister" brigades.Tired and hungry you may find yourself winding up at the Bahu Mall at the southern end of the Boulevard, where you can refresh yourself at the string of small eateries behind the row of shops aptly named Bay Street Cafe.

Shopping Experience

The shopping centre in the Manado City at first was focussed around the Kesatuan Garden of the Nation (TKB).Together with the growth of Manado city economics, in the period in the past 3 years, the property industry and retail in Manado developing was fast enough.
Marked by the opening of four modern shopping centres just that is clouds of Mal Manado (2004), Manado Town Square and Bulevar Mall (2006) as well as that just was declared was IT Center Manado.Mega Mall in Manado
Mega Mall is a new Mall ( Shopping Center ) in Manado city, located in the main street of Manado or "Boulevard Street ". There is another Mall ( Shopping Center ) located in the south of Manado, and it is called " Bahu Mall " Both Malls have all the things you need. Books and Magazines Books and Megazines, Menswear, Womenswear, Toys and Games, Shoes, Health and Beuty, Music Movies Store, Sporting Goods, Fashion, Modern Barbershop, KFC, Pizza Hut, Matahari Department Store Matahari , Gold and Diamonds for sale, Weekly Local Exhibitions inside the Mall, Pub and Cafe, IQ Billiard, etc. The mall opens at 9 AM and closes at 10 PM. It is always crowded with people, esp. teenagers on weekends. The four shopping centres were located in the part of the road that was same that is the Piere Tendean road or that more was known with Manado Boulevard.Several other shopping centres were then being built in the part of this road, especially in the area of reclamation of the coast. All along this road also was gotten several hotels had stars, the restaurant and cafe that peddled multitudinous food and was opened till late at night. The centre cinderamata typical Manado could be found in Street BW Lapian.Gotten several souvenir shops that sold food, the fashion, the typical Manado handicraft/North Sulawesi.
Manado doesn't present the mind boggling array of handicrafts and items to be found in other areas of Indonesia, it may pay to think outside the square for something that price wise just couldn't be matched at home.
The following list represents some items you may not have thought of looking at:
Eyecare products - for the visually challenged amongst you, there are a number of Optic shops in Manado which sell all manner of contact lenses, lense care products, and a fantastic range of frames and lenses. While you probably won't have time to get glasses made up, a good pair of frames are probably a good purchase and most major brands are avaliable if you shop around. Check out the "Optik" shops; Internasional, Ceria, Harmonis and Rama on Jalan Sam Ratulangi and Optik Seis and Melawai near Matahari Store.

Clothing - again we see that Manado can't quite match the selection found in other cities but it is worthwhile checking out some of the original brand name products to be found in Matahari, Coco or Roberta stores. Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Polo and Pierre Cardin are amongst the well priced items you could stock up on. Good business shirts and ties are always a good purchase.

Material (Fabric) - there are a variety of small shops around the Pasar 45 (Market area in the centre of town) which specialise in materials of all colours. The Minahasan Karawang is a pretty local fabric which would make an interesting souvenir from the North Sulawesi region. The shops are also stocked with a large selection of batik fabric from Java which are worthwhile picking up if you are not travelling on to Yogyakarta or Solo. In addition to using the fabric for cushion covers or sarongs, what about covering photo albums with batik for a unique reminder of your trip to Indonesia.

Sports Equipment - perhaps not the cheapest items around but depending on the actual exchange rate probably still a worthwhile purchase. I recently bought a life jacket for my son which would have been 3x the price at home. Plastic inflatable toys are also a good buy and easy to take home. Pay a visit to the Adidas shop on Jalan Sam Ratulangi, or Akbar Ali. Or if you are in either Jumbo store or Matahari check out their sports sections and scout around.
Souvenirs - Manado does have a number of souvenir shops, and although a number of the items on sale in these shops are from Bali or Toraja, there are a few interesting items unique to North Sulawesi which you may wish to take home. The region is famous for spices; and cloves, cinnammon, vanilla and nutmeg are sold in small packages and these can be bought at a nukber of the souvenir shops. Figurines made out of cloves are also readily available and make an interesting purchase if that suits your taste. If you are a diver you certainly can't leave without a "Dive Bunaken" t-shirt and these are sold in any number of the shops. A couple of shops in Pasar 45 also sell a variety of t-shirts, so keep an eye out for them there as well.A visit to Logam Jaya located on the second floor of Matahari Department Store, Warung Ventje and Bohusami on Jalan Sam Ratulangi or the Souvenir Shop Indac just past the Post Office, could well be rewarding. Or if you are heading out towards the airport you could also shop off at the Maleo Souvenir Shop on Jalan Sudirman and the Manado Art Gallery. While you're out and about in town do set aside some time for shopping and keep your Rupiah handy. You never know what will catch your eye and certainly if Manado is your last or only stop in Indonesia, you can't leave without at least one interesting Indonesian item (or at least a Calvin Klein shirt). The Rupiah is your greatest advantage but remember that all your purchases are helping local businesses and the economy, so don't be too afraid and spend up large!
